Since September 2025, Anna Rethmann has been working as a research associate at the Institut für Wirtschaftsinformatik – Service Information Systems at Technische Universität Braunschweig. Her research focuses on questions of bottom-up participation: how citizens can actively and effectively shape societal transformation processes, which forms, opportunities, and limitations of participation exist, how participatory structures can impact social and ecological sustainability, and how digital technologies can meaningfully support participation – or when analogue formats are more appropriate.

Her research work is based at the Leibniz ScienceCampus – Postdigital Participation – Braunschweig; in addition, she is involved in further (participation)projects. She is pursuing a doctorate in this field. Previously, Anna Rethmann completed the Master’s programme in Organisation, Governance, Education as well as the Bachelor’s programme in Social Sciences at Technische Universität Braunschweig.
