On 14 June, a cycle tour in Braunschweig showcased six pilot projects demonstrating how climate adaptation can be put into practice in the city. Participants visited the German Red Cross “Summer Street”, the Diaconal Society’s “Heat Action Day 2025”, the “Green Oasis” by the City for All initiative, nature-based gardening with children at KiTa e.V., an environmental education project at the Free Waldorf School, and climate-resilient street design in the Donau neighbourhood.

Under the motto “Small Spaces – Big Impact: Shaping and Implementing Climate Adaptation Together!”, the Co-Adapted Braunschweig project – initiated by the City of Braunschweig’s Department for Climate Protection and Strategic Environmental Planning together with the ISU – Institute for Sustainable Urbanism at TU Braunschweig – launched a call earlier this year for co-creative project ideas to address the impacts of climate change in Braunschweig.

Through Co-Adapted Braunschweig (COABS), the project partners aim to develop by 2025 an integrated strategy for climate adaptation in the city, working in collaboration with a range of stakeholders. Partners include the City of Braunschweig’s Department of Environment, the ISU – Institute for Sustainable Urbanism, and the Institute of Geoecology at TU Braunschweig.

The ISU, under the leadership of Professor Vanessa Miriam Carlow, together with COABS team members Olaf Mumm and Benedikt Herz, is also part of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Postdigital Participation, which supports participatory research approaches to tackling major societal challenges.
