Since the end of May, the second sub-study has been underway as part of the project Cultural Participation in the Museum II – Developing Participatory Access to Museums for People with Intellectual Disabilities. This time, it is being conducted within the vocational training section of Lebenshilfe Wolfsburg.

Following 29 individual interviews with employees of sheltered workshops (WfbM) about their leisure interests outside the home and their opportunities for cultural participation, the focus of the second study is now on the digital component of the research project.

Over an eight-week period, four participants from the vocational training area, together with their group leaders, are testing the CompanionApp, which was developed at Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences.

The prototype – developed in an agile, interdisciplinary and participatory process – is an augmented reality-based navigation app designed to discreetly support people with orientation difficulties, thereby enhancing their independence and autonomy. For the first time, the CompanionApp is being tested over a longer period by individuals with intellectual disabilities. The main focus of this study lies in usability, practicality, and the implementation of augmented reality.

The results aim to contribute to the further development and optimisation of the CompanionApp, with the ultimate goal of offering a navigation app tailored for people with spatial orientation difficulties that is easy to use.
