City of the future

H. Zhang

More than two-thirds of the world's population will live in cities by 2050. Cities are places of desire and innovation centers, but at the same time drivers of resource consumption and climate change and particularly affected by the consequences. However, cities have immense potential to be places of sustainable change.

As one of four thematic focal points of the TU Braunschweig, "City of the Future" has been investigating since 2015 how cities can continue to meet the needs of their inhabitants in the future in view of the far-reaching challenges of a globalized world, advancing urbanization, resource depletion and climate change. In a particularly interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, the scientists' examination goes beyond physical aspects and city boundaries and integrates historical, literary, philosophical, social and ecological topics.
