Prof. Dr. Eckhardt Fuchs

Prof. Eckhardt Fuchs took over as director of the Georg Eckert Institute in October 2015. He joined the Institute in 2007 as research director and had been deputy director since June 2009.

He studied from 1983 to 1988 at the University of Leipzig and completed his PhD in 1992. He has worked as a historian at numerous academic institutions, such as the Historical Commission in Berlin, the John F. Kennedy Institute at the Freie Universität of Berlin, the German Historical Institute in Washington and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin.

His research interests include globalisation processes in the education sector, especially those involving international organisations (global governance), education policy in Europe, the history of transnational education relationships, the global history of textbook revision and the history of teaching materials.

From 2001 until 2007 Eckhardt Fuchs worked as an academic assistant at the University of Mannheim (Chair of Educational Sciences I), where he qualified as a university lecturer in 2004. He has been awarded scholarships by a variety of organisations. He is a member of numerous academic societies, co-editor of the journals Comparativ and Paedagogica Historica, and acts as a consultant for many foundations and journals. Since 2011, Eckhardt Fuchs has held the Chair for History of Education/Comparative Education at the Technical University Braunschweig. He was president of the International Standing Conference for History Education (ISCHE) from 2012 to 2015.
