The project "Cultural Participation in the Museum - the Potential of Digitalisation" is carried out by the interdisciplinary research team of the Ostfalia University supervised by Prof. Sandra Verena Müller (Faculty of Social Work) and Prof. Dr. Ina Schiering (Faculty of Computer Science). It is realized in cooperation with the German Maritime Museum Bremerhaven and people with intellectual disabiltities of the Lebenshilfe Bremerhaven e. V.. The German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven is used as an exemplary living lab. It is part of the Leibniz Association as Leibniz Institute for Maritime History. The target group of the project are people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Two main aims are pursued. First, to identify the needs of people with intellectual disabilities in terms of accessibility and cultural participation in the museum as well as their preferences for technical support within the museum. In a second step, the potential of assistive technologies as communication medium are evaluated in order to support people with intellectual disabilities during individual visits to museums. A participatory research approach allows the direct involvement of people with intellectual disabilities in the development process and to act as co-researchers.
